The Best Oils for Making Soy Candles
Making soy candles is a popular and eco-friendly craft. The use of soy wax allows for candles that burn much cleaner and more slowly than their paraffin wax counterparts. Since soy wax is a softer wax, it is more conducive to blending in scents, making it ideal for home candle makers who want to create their own special scents. To craft the best possible soy candles, it’s important to use the right oils when combining your scents.
Using essential oils to scent your soy candles is the most highly recommended method. Essential oils are the pure, organic compounds extracted from plants and flowers and can add true, natural smells to your candles. Some of the best essential oils to use for soy candles include:
- Clary Sage
- Ylang Ylang
Fragrance oils can also be used in soy candles, but will not provide the same purely natural scents as essential oils. Fragrance oils, which are synthetic compounds designed to imitate natural scents, come in all kinds of fun fragrances and can be combined to come up with unique combinations.
When using fragrance oils, it’s important to look for ones specifically labeled as “Soy Fragrance Oils.” These will have been specifically tested for use with soy wax, and will work best with this type of wax. Some popular fragrance oils for soy wax include:
- Coconut Lime
- Mint Chocolate
- Citrus Zest
- Cinnamon Vanilla
Amounts of Fragrance Oil
When using fragrance oils, the general rule of thumb is that one-and-a-half ounces of essential or fragrance oil should be used for each pound of soy wax. When combining essential or fragrance oils, you may wish to start with one-half of the total amount of oil before adding additional oils to get the scent just right.
Soy candles can truly come alive when you add just the right scent. Taking the time to use the best oils for soy candles can make all the difference in creating a candle that will fill a room with an amazing aroma. With the right oil selection, you can be sure your next batch of soy candles will be a success.
